IBS Information
What is IBS?
IBS stands for irritable bowel syndrome. IBS is a common digestive condition which affects how the gut moves and functions, causing symptoms like tummy pain, bloating and a change in bowel movements (constipation, diarrhea or a mixture of both).
What causes IBS?
It’s still not clear what causes IBS, but it’s likely down to a combination of factors. People with IBS tend to have more sensitive nerve endings in their gut, which makes them more susceptible to pain and bloating. There is also evidence that people with IBS have changes in the balance of bacteria in their gut which can be down to changes in diet, lifestyle, or the use of antibiotics. Some people develop IBS after a gut infection called gastroenteritis - this is known as post-infective IBS.
Why have I got IBS?
We still don’t know what causes IBS but there are a few factors which scientists have identified as playing a role. People with IBS tend to have a very sensitive gut, which means they are more likely to feel pain and discomfort. There’s also evidence that changes in gut bacteria, stress, and previous gut infections may contribute. And about a third of people with IBS have abnormally fast or slow gut motility (movement) which can speed up or slow down bowel movements.
How do I know if it’s IBS or just a dodgy tummy?
Good question! IBS is a chronic (long-term) condition, whereas a dodgy or upset tummy typically settles after a few days. If you have had a change in your bowel (poo) movements for more than a couple of weeks, we’d recommend booking an appointment with your doctor.
How is IBS diagnosed?
IBS is diagnosed medically, by a doctor. They will assess your symptoms and most likely run a few simple tests to rule out the possibility of other more serious conditions like Coeliac disease or inflammatory bowel disease, because these share the same symptoms as IBS. It’s really important to get a medical diagnosis, to make sure you have access to the right support and treatment.
What can I do to manage my IBS?
There are a variety of different approaches to managing symptoms, and you might find more than one helpful. The first is lifestyle and dietary changes – these can include changes to your alcohol and caffeine intake, plus taking steps to actively include more time for relaxation. If these don’t work, you can ask your doctor about trying a low FODMAP diet.
If your IBS does not improve with changes to diet and lifestyle, your doctor may recommend trying medication (like laxatives which work on the muscle in the gut) according to your symptoms.
FODMAP Help
What is FODMAP?
FODMAP is an acronym (abbreviation) for Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides and Polyols. These are scientific names for a group of sugars which are not easily absorbed in the gut, but can be easily broken down by bacteria in the large intestine.
What does FODMAP stand for?
Fermentable describes the process by which bacteria breakdown sugars for energy.
Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides and Polyols are names for groups of short chain sugars which are found in a variety of foods.
How do FODMAPs cause symptoms in people with IBS?
FODMAPs are a group of short chain sugars (carbohydrates) found in various foods. Most carbohydrates are broken down and absorbed in the small intestine, but FODMAPs aren’t well absorbed. This means they move through the gut undigested, attracting water as they go. Once they arrive in the large intestine, FODMAP sugars are consumed by the microbes that live there, which results in gas formation. The gas and water in the large intestine stretch the walls of the gut, and this can trigger pain and bloating in people with IBS.
What are high FODMAP foods?
High FODMAP foods are foods which contain high levels of FODMAPs- a group of carbohydrates (sugars) which aren’t easily absorbed by the gut. FODMAPs are found in a wide range of foods, including wheat, garlic, onion, milk and some fruits and vegetables. There’s no way to ‘guess’ how many FODMAPs are in a food – instead foods are laboratory tested for FODMAP content by Monash University, and this information is made publically available. Some foods are ‘Low FODMAP’ at certain portion sizes and ‘High FODMAP’ in bigger serving sizes.
What is a low FODMAP diet?
A low FODMAP diet is a type of diet which limits foods high in certain carbohydrates (sugars) known as FODMAPs, which can trigger symptoms like pain and bloating in people with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
You can find out more about FODMAPs and the Low FODMAP Diet on these pages:
What are the 3 stages of a low FODMAP diet?
There are three stages to the low FODMAP diet, and it’s important to follow each in turn.
Stage 1 is Elimination – in this stage all high FODMAP foods are reduced in the diet, and replaced with low FODMAP alternatives. This stage lasts for 2-6 weeks. If there has been an improvement in your symptoms, you then move to stage two. If not, please consult your dietitian or doctor for what to do next. Do not stay on elimination long term as this will negatively affect your gut microbiome.
Stage 2 is Reintroduction – in this stage you’ll reintroduce high FODMAP foods one at a time in increasing portion sizes to see which ones trigger symptoms. This stage can last for 8-12 weeks as you work out which high FODMAP foods you can tolerate.
Stage 3 is Personalisation – in this stage you’ll go back to a normal diet, including the high FODMAP foods you can tolerate, and avoiding those you can’t, or eating them in smaller portions.
How do I get started with a low FODMAP diet?
If you want to try a low FODMAP diet, you first need to get a medical diagnosis of IBS. This is important, as IBS shares the same symptoms as other gut conditions.
Once you have been diagnosed, your doctor may suggest trying medication or other lifestyle changes to manage your symptoms. If symptoms persist, you can then consider a low FODMAP diet with the support of a dietitian. You can ask your doctor for a referral to an FODMAP specialist dietitian, or request support from a private dietitian. Some private health insurers will also cover sessions with a FODMAP trained dietitian.
When should I think about trying a low FODMAP diet?
The low FODMAP diet isn’t the first thing to try when it comes to managing IBS. Simple lifestyle changes such as cutting down on caffeine and alcohol and reducing stress levels can be really effective first steps. Read more about these first steps here.
How long does a low FODMAP diet last?
From start to finish (when you enter the personalisation phase) the diet lasts about three months. This is a big commitment, so it’s important to be aware of what’s involved, and to get dietitian support to ensure you have the best chance of achieving good symptom control.

Let customers speak for us
from 1054 reviewsI’m shocked how nice the tomato sauce and pesto are. I was out on a low FODMAP diet and felt like I couldn’t have anything so these have made a huge impact in being able to stick to this diet, didn’t expect much but they’re lovely. Not tried the other yet.
What amazing products. Great taste and wonderful to see food labelled as FODMAP friendly.
New to the low FODMAP diet, I was delighted to discover this range. It’s been astonishingly difficult to find low FODMAP- approved foods. So far, I’ve only tried the Pesto but as this is delicious, I anticipate the two other products I bought (chicken stock and BBQ sauce) will be equally as good. Now that I’m having to read food labels, I cannot believe we’re subject to the nonsense that’s added to the majority of products. Long may Bay’s Kitchen last, as I will certainly be staying a customer.
Really help plain fish and meat and vegetables taste nice again by being able to add a sauce.
This is a really tasty sauce. Great with chicken or prawns and rice for a quick mid week meal.
Would definately recommend it.
This little book is amazing. Everything that I need to log my food intake and whether I have any symptoms afterwards.
I'm a busy working mum of 2 and it is so easy to fill out every evening. Thank you so much Bay x
Had this for dinner the other night and we both enjoyed this very much. It was a last minute dinner as I realised I hadn't anything planned for that night so that's another win in our book.
very nice flavour and texture would highly recommend will be buying again
BBQ sauce is often only used for bbq meals or ribs. But this is great to give a meal an uplift. Added a small amount to bolognese sauce portion and it was great. Really gave the meal an up lift that I have been missing for so long due to multiple food intolerance. Definately recommend
Excellent
How can something so healthy taste this good? It must be saucery! But seriously, great sauces. 10/10. Would order again.
